CloudSigma, an IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) provider, is abandoning its hard-disk drives for the performance boost of SSD.

 

CloudSigma is confident that the all solid-state solution, offered by SolidFire, will be able to provide the required performance and uptime they demand, without raising prices on customers, despite the higher price point of solid-state storage costs.The Zurich-based provider serves Helix Nebula, a cloud used by scientists who demand performance.

 

COO Bernino Lind of Cloud Sigma states that SSD will resolve issues with HPC workloads because aggregated spinning-disk setups are restricted to up to 10,000 IOPS, whereas one SSD will provide 100,000 to 1.5 million IOPS, thus mitigating contention.  Designed specifically for cloud providers, customers report performance boosts of 8x-12x for heavy I/O database work and 2x-4x for an entire stack.  Additionally, by adopting a NUMA topology, you avoid RAM access issues, an important factor critical for big data workloads.
